Hello Newcastle! This is your weekend, My name is Elly and i’m at the Newcastle Foreshore where the Mattara Festival will start this weekend! The Mattara started in 1961 and is one of Newcastle’s Biggest and oldest family festivals. The festival will open with a “Kids Carnival Day” on Saturday where you can get up and close with baby animals and get your photo taken with Peppa Pig and Spider Man! At 11:30am Ronald McDonald will drop in followed by Childrens dancing all day. There will also be rides, markets, a lego arena, then at 3pm Kotara High’s `Emma Nicole` will perform on Centre stage.

The Mattara is not just for the kids because on Sunday the festival will host `Moto mania 2014` where there will be Cars, Caravans, Bikes, Boats, a Show & Shine and all your motor accessory needs. You can also join in by judging the best car and the winner will be announced at 2pm. Also on Sunday there will be Children’s Entertainment including The Little Scallywagz, Ruby the Clown, the Itty Bitty Dance Studio and lots more.

Also on Saturday the Big Beach Challenge will take place in the heart of Newcastle. The course runs along Merewether, Dixon Park and Bar Beach.The three kilometre loop will offer runners, or walkers the opportunity to choose a variety of laps. Spectators can get up close to the action or chill on the beach while their loved ones compete. Information at `h events.net`

We also have a weekend packed full of music, starting this Friday where Reece Mastin will perform at the Newcastle Panthers for his “Wolf in the Woods” national tour. Reece won X-Factor Australia in 2011 and his debut single “Good Night” reached 1 in Australia, and became Sony’s fastest selling digital single.

and on Saturday you can party all day at the Wollombi Music Festival, the line-up includes `The Morrisons`, `King Tide`, `Benny Walker Band`, `The Ninth Chapter` and lots more. Gates will open at 10:30am and the festival finishes at Midnight.

and finally Saturday the Mayfield Bowling Club will host the Hunter Record Fair. It is the Hunter’s biggest record fair with records, cd’s, dvd’s and a few rare items. It will be at 4 Norris Avenue Mayfield, information at australianrecordfair.com
