The annual `Light the night` walk is on this Friday 7th October at the Newcastle Foreshore. Hundreds of people will gather to shine their own lantern in support of people with blood cancer. The event aims to raise money for the Leukaemia Foundation and features an array of entertainment including kids activities and food stalls. The event kicks off at 5:30pm and the official lantern ceremony is at 7:15 hosted by Jamie Abbott.

Then on Sunday the Newcastle Surf Club will hold the Blacksmiths to Breakwall Coastal Walk, the event starts at Blacksmiths Beach at 7:30am where thousands of walkers will make their way through Belmont, Redhead, Dudley, Glenrock, along the Newcastle Memorial Walk then onto the finish line at Nobbys lighthouse. The course traverses some rugged terrain and takes over 7 hours so it’s definitely not for the faint hearted. For more information visit the address on the screen.

Further West now to Pokolbin where the Opera in the vinyards will be held this Saturday at Roche Estate in the Hunter Valley. The event celebrates it’s 19th year and will feature opera singers; AMELIA FARRUGIA, David Hobson, Natalie Aroyan and a special international guest tenor, Richard Troxell. The event is held under the stars with Maestro Brian Castles-Onion conducting the Metropolitan Orchestra. We spoke to concert promoter Paul Chesher who tells us what to expect on the night.

Guests are encouraged to arrive early to sample great local food and wine. Gates open at 4pm and for more information visit operainthevineyards.com.au

And over to Lake Macquarie where the Hunter Academy of Sport will host `Sportsfest` at Speers Point Park. The family friendly event includes Fitness classes, battling cages, sports challenges and a 5k and 10k fun run. Entry to the event is free however the fun run is $20 with funds raised going to the Cancer Council in the Hunter. Information can be found on the Hunter Academy website on your screen.

and between now and Sunday 9th October `Frugal Forrest` is on the Maitland Regional Art Gallery. The stunning art installation was created over a 3 year period and resembles a forrest that was intricately crafted from everyday junk which was headed for the tip. The artists sought advice and help from scientists, other artists, musicians and schools across the Mid North Coast and amazing end result is a must see this weekend. Visit the Frugal Forest website for details.

And lastly, the Skatepark at Bar Beach will be closed next week between the 10th and 14th of October while the Newcastle City Council carries out scheduled maintenance work. Skaters may use Newcastle South Beach, Dangar Park or Lambton Park as an alternative. Scheduling of this work is subject to favorable weather conditions.
