NEW ROAD TO HELP TRAFFIC FLOW DURING LIGHT RAIL CONSTRUCTION

Construction has started on a new road connecting Honeysuckle Drive and Hunter Street at Worth Place as part of the NSW Government’s $500 million plus Revitalising Newcastle program.
The new road link will assist traffic flow in the city centre during light rail construction and when light rail is operational.

“This new road connection will be open in coming weeks,” Revitalising Newcastle Program Director Michael Cassel said.

“Worth Place is one of two new road connections we are delivering, with the other at Steel Street to be constructed next year.”

“These new road links will enhance connectivity between the city and our spectacular working harbour; a key ingredient as Newcastle evolves into a world-class city for the twenty first century.”

The Worth Place link will close temporarily to allow light rail construction to take place in the vicinity from late 2017, once the intersection of Merewether and Hunter streets is reopened to traffic.

Once light rail construction is complete, the new links will be permanent features of the city’s road network.

“People are already realising the benefits of being able to move quickly and easily across the former heavy rail corridor with pedestrian crossings at Steel Street, Kuwumi Place, Worth Place, Argyle Street, Perkins Street, Wolfe Street and Civic”, Mr Cassel said.

“Projects like the new roads will ensure light rail works seamlessly with pedestrians, cyclists and cars.”

“We are transforming the way people move around the city”
